Langport and Street Vets - End of Life Care

End of Life Care

Choosing the moment to bid a final farewell to a beloved pet may be one of the most challenging decisions a pet owner faces. Yet, it is also one of the bravest and kindest acts.

Euthanasia is conducted by one of our Veterinary Surgeon, accompanied by a Veterinary Nurse, usually at the practice although other arrangements can be made. Please share your preferences with us in advance so that we can ensure there is sufficient time for these emotional moments. Additionally, we make an effort to schedule these appointments during quieter periods, providing a more peaceful environment for both you and your pet.

We do offer euthanasia at home, offering a more familiar and relaxed setting for both your pet and you.

Once you have made the decision for your pet to be put to sleep you will be asked by the Vet or nurse to sign a consent form.  This document acknowledges that you have entrusted us to proceed with your pet’s euthanasia.

Deciding whether to be present during your pet’s euthanasia is a personal choice. If you choose to stay, the procedure will only commence when you are ready, the Veterinary Surgeon/nurse  will explain what will happen at each stage. You’ll have the opportunity to comfort and stroke your pet throughout. If staying is too difficult or distressing for you, it may be advisable to step out momentarily and return later to bid your pet farewell when you feel more prepared.

Euthanasia is typically performed by injecting a concentrated anaesthetic agent into the vein. At times, the Veterinary Surgeon may administer a sedative beforehand, injected into the muscle in their back or leg, to help them relax. Following this, we’ll leave your pet with you as they enter a light sleep. Once asleep, we will return to administer the anaesthetic agent into the vein. At this point, your pet will peacefully lose consciousness as their body begins to shut down. The vet will then check and confirm that your pet has passed away.

Remember your Pet – on our Special Memories page

We have a memorial page on our website, if you would like your pet to be added then please send us a photo of them, with a little message about them to office@langportvets.co.uk. This will then get uploaded to the memorial page.

What options do I have after my pet has been put to sleep?

Cremation
Here at Langport and Street Veterinary Centre we use Pet Cremation Services, a family run business that are based in Dorset and have several years’ experience.

Individual Cremation
Your pet will be left with us, to then be cremated individually with Pet Cremation Services. Their ashes will then be carefully placed in a casket or scatter tube of your choice (other options are available upon request). They will then be securely packaged and returned to us for you to collect. We will contact you when they are back with us, this process normally takes around 10 days.

Communal Cremation
Your pet will be left in our care and then will be cremated with a small number of other pets with Pet Cremation Services. As this is a communal cremation you will not be able to receive any ashes back.

Burial
Some owners wish to take their pets home for burial, but this is not always possible due to health, safety, and environmental concerns.
